Not having support for your primary business system is like not having
car/health/home/life insurance, very risky and very stupid (IMHO).

You need software support because of several things:

1. It's literally impossible for anyone to know and fully understand
every facet of OS/400. I have clients that are Fortune 100, with hundreds
of individuals on their staff, and no one knows everything.

2. OS/400 is complicated. It breaks, and you need someone to get to
development so that when it breaks, a fix can be developed.

3. It's an OS that's primed for custom development. You can develop
custom code more cost effectively on this platform than any other.

4. If your executive feels that this would be a good savings of money,
tell him or her to go out and support it themselves.

Isn't the big thing that you can get the upgrades for no cost? I really
don't understand that all myself.
