Well, I've created my DCR. Will keep you posted.

Simon,

You are so right. As customers we DO need to create noise, using DCR's,
etc.

But I'll grant you that a bulk of the shops will use this limitation as
yet another excuse to not adopt journals. Just as they use any glitch or
temporary limitation in a new technology as a reason to stay with the
techniques they've learned 15 years ago.

It has always been an issue for those people using journalling. Given
that it took at least 10 years from the time journalling was supported
(CPF 7 I think) for people to actually start using it I am not
surprised that most people haven't encountered the problem. Even now
I'd wager that most OS/400 shops don't use journalling. A side-effect
of the legendary stability of our favourite box.

How many of the main ERP vendors ship with journalling active? Probably
zero.
How many use commitment control as a matter of course? Probably zero.
How many support the possibility? Possibly bugger all.

Any library with a journal (and/or receiver) cannot be renamed. The
help text for RNMOBJ states this. There are a number of other object
types that will also stop a library being renamed. If a library cannot
be renamed it seems reasonable that it cannot be restored under a
different name (or if it can, that some things aren't linked the way
they used to be). I would expect some error messages during the restore
explaining what didn't work.

It would certainly be possible to overcome this limitation (although I
recall someone, George Timms (?), Bill Davidson (?), explaining why it
was the way it was--something to do with object names being stored
inside journals or journal receivers--but I can't find any reference to
what I recall) but there would have to be a major amount of noise from
customers before it happens.

Regards,
Simon Coulter.
