Not because it's iSeries, or OS/400, but I just can't see IBM busting hump
to improve 5250 so that you can implement multiple threads. It's because
it's green screen.

I think IBM has tried the interactive tax now for a goodly number of
years. And, perhaps that did convert some people to the Mecca of GUI. As
if the purported benefits of GUI in the first place weren't supposed to be
enough. Now, that the time has been there, the Carrot of the purported
benefits of GUI have been waved for years and the Stick of the 5250 tax
has also been there for a few years, isn't it time to repeal the 5250 tax
and open up the multiple threads and allow the rest of the people to just
get on with the freedom to choose?

Re: Hmmmm.....$1 Billion

Unless IBM improves the core OS400, I dont think we will get as good
results from this spending as we could.

The fact that you cant run multiple threads in an interactive job in
os400 tells you there are underlying problems with the system code. as
in bugs. Those "bugs" have remained for a number of releases now so
the worry is that IBM management has decided OS400 is not worth the
expense of a major thread safe rewrite.

Threads are important. Without them you cant implement an event
driven programming model. And the popularity of Visual Basic shows
how productive event driven programming can be.
