In my experience, the dongle was a hassle but it worked ok. Most of the packages that I have seen that use one allow you to install the software on multiple machines, it just won't let you run it if the dongle isn't attached.

Software dongles used to be more popular than they are now. I haven't
seen them much in the past few years. If it's set up right and in a
stable environment, it works ok. It's a drag if you want to install the
