Downside? How about if every application required one? You'd need a desk 3 or 4 feet deeper to hold them all. Imagine this huge chain of dongles piggy backed one into the next. :) If you've got a laptop, you'd have more stuff to carry and lose. And I'd imaging there'd be some small additional power drain, reducing battery life. Also, what happens when parallel ports fall out of favor as they are currently doing? As they disappear from PCs, the dongles will have to be replaced by USB or other dongles. Let's hope your software vendor is still in business & doesn't gouge on the trade-in.
