This is true. I have a client that had an old AS/400 (one of the white boxes seen in the Windows tour). When I got there for the first time about a year ago to install a model 720, I discovered that the old machine had not been IPL'ed since September of 1993. It was just chugging along running one application. Nobody had paid it any attention until they decided to get around to doing the Y2K upgrade on their application software. There's no documentation that I know of that says that you must IPL, except if you are doing PTF's or an OS upgrade. There are reasons why one should IPL occasionally, but IBM's not forcing you. Hello, I am an RPG programmer and we have an Iseries 825. I was told by one of our operators that IPLs do not need to be routinely scheduled. Is this true? Is there any documentation I can refer to?
