I assume (perhaps a dumb thing to do) that the client's systems are written in 2E, so why dump it? Now, if the client is moving away from 2E that's a different story, but if not, it still works great for what it does. If you have some good 2E people I'd have them write a code generator over the model files so you have less code to write. I assume (again, perhaps dumb <G>) that you'll be writing the "batch server programs" as Execute External Functions and then "wrappering" them with a stored procedure definition. It's a relatively simple thing to do to generate the SQL necessary to define the excextfun program to SQL as a stored proc, sure beats writing the SQL over and over and over and over and ov... While you're writing code that writes code, be nice to the Java folks and generate the code they need to call the stored procs, again you have the ideal information necessary to generate this in the model. >but the licences and extra software from IBM (WDS, SQL, etc) >will probably make the cost prohibative. Especially since they (the client) is supposed to give you a VPN in about a month. Tell them to get off their a**. I don't want to quote prices for CA, but IIRC, 2E will cost you 10s of thousands alone. Now, since it's only for a month, and the client presumably (there I go again) has a 2E license already, maybe CA will let you pay a nominal fee to use another copy for a short period of time. -Walden PS. If you don't have good Synon people I might know a couple! <G> ------------ Walden H Leverich III President & CEO Tech Software (516) 627-3800 x11 WaldenL@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.TechSoftInc.com Quiquid latine dictum sit altum viditur. The guys will probably not be doing an Java coding, but I will need the RPG and COBOL compilers for the project. Are the compilers part of base OS/400? Also, will I need the Comms utilities? I think this is going to be one of those things that looks good on the surface (the box itself is relatively inexpensive), but the licences and extra software from IBM (WDS, SQL, etc) will probably make the cost prohibative. If I had my way, I'd be dumping the Synon stuff real fast and avoid the licence altogether, but that's the way it goes.
