The first would be to change the corporate culture that some companies have in which IS is just an expense. IS is one of the four pillars of our company. The VP of IS sits in on each divisions strategic planning sessions. And has been known to attend periodic PPR's or Plant Progress Reports. Everyone in systems has gone through the course "Seven Basic Habits of Highly Effective People" and regularly attend refresher courses. Everyone in systems is STRONGLY encouraged to attend our internal "Management According to Dekko". And will regularly attend refresher courses. This course has a strong emphasis on problem solving. Everyone in systems is encouraged to further their education. We provide tuition reimbursement, magazine subscriptions, local user group dues and meeting fees, books. Unless things are REALLY tight we send 2 people to every COMMON. We've also used the IBM tech conference. We've brought on site trainers such as Jon Paris to teach RPGILE and Code/400. We have a top notch help desk with education and the tools to perform their job well. I cannot say enough positive things about their manager. She deserves her well earned break this weekend to go to the machine gun shoot down at Knob Creek. We've had some layoff's, but our turnover is extremely low. Other than to go back to college full time, and the layoff's, I don't think we've had someone leave on their own in over 4 years. We keep our equipment up to date. We've been known to walk up to people and offer to upgrade their PC's before they've even remarked they're in need. We keep the bigger iron running fast. We do not follow the mentality that a degradation of performance and constant high cpu utilization is just a healthy sign that you are putting the resource to use.
