Chuck,

some comments from me:
1) If you use the windows server machine DON'T GO WINS !
Even Microsoft doesn't recommend it's use anymore, the way to go is DNS,
or, better, DDNS, which is dynamic DNS, that is, windows clients from W2k on
are able to put in their hosts name themselves, this gives you an automatic
method to built up a DNS server for all host in your (windows) network.
The "server" machines like the iSeries or other entries like the proxy you
have to put in manually anyways.
If you'd like more infos on this, come back here, I will be glad to help you.

2) I've done McAfee Network setups, Symantec Enterprise Server setups, CA's
Inoculate IT network distribution server and Trendmicros software.
All work more or less the same.
With the NAI product (McAfee) I have the most experience in heterogenous
networks, at two customers I actually do distribute the signature files through
an IFS-share, which works perfect even over VPN connections, which normally
have problems to see "WINS" (netbios) on windows machines, which leads us back
to point 1): use DNS entries for your server.

3) Perhaps you don't need a server for this, I dont know the Sophos product,
sorry, but the McAfee product for instance needs a workstation with minimum
W2k on it, you could use one of your admin-PCs to setup a "managing-console"
for the antivirus distribution, while still using the IFS as the central
repository place for the SW updates and signature files.

Philipp

Is the Linux server available for other use? I _believe_ Sophos has this
ability for Linux. If so, it _might_ be a good choice as the controlling
system, maintaining the central update directory through Samba. It ought to
be a relatively low drain on it. The authority for the share could be
essentially *RWX for Linux-based access and only *RX for everybody else.

Just a possible option.

I had thought about that a few years back and this server was MIPS so no go
on Sophos. We upgrade to a Wintel version a year after that but got burned
BAD by a Samba attach to I am really gun shy about opening that back up...
