Bonnie, I worked for a company a couple of years ago where we used PTC-960SL's for scanning outgoing shipments. We looked at some Windows CE devices because of DHCP support and other networking issues. Function key support was a big item on my list too. It's not just function keys, it also should support reset, tab, field-exit, etc. My biggest problem with them was the integration (or lack thereof) between the emulation client and the laser for scanning bar codes. Things may have improved since then but at the time it seemed that every device that I tested would allow the user to scan even though the screen was input inhibited. They could press the trigger, the laser would come on, and it would beep after it read the bar code. The majority of users doing the scanning don't look at the screen unless they want to change what they are working on or if something doesn't work right. With the CE devices they would be oblivious to the fact that they missed something. The 960SL might still be DOS-based and not support DHCP but it has great functionality and gives you what you expect out of it. We are increasing the number of jobs that require handhelds. We currently use the Telxon PTC-960SL. It provides us with 24 function keys and has been reliable. The search has been given to the network guy who doesn't do anything on the AS/400 especially not code. He has come up with Symbol PTD6846 which appears to have only 10 function keys (and requires new access points through out the plant). Has anyone found other scanners that may have at least 12 function keys or are we doomed to re-write our code? Thanks, Bonnie Lokenvitz Engineered Polymers _______________________________________________ This is the Midrange Systems Technical Discussion (MIDRANGE-L) mailing list To post a message email: MIDRANGE-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/midrange-l or email: MIDRANGE-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-l.
