IBM support is good, and Lotus support is good. And I pay a SERIOUS chunk of change for that support. However that hasn't stopped me from having incidents open for more than one calendar year waiting for a resolution. This is why I'll often ask these lists for a solution, a clarification of my usage of the function in question, or a workaround. Granted, I'll still report the problem, if for no other reason than the good of the community at large. In some cases perhaps the open source method is a better solution. Then again, perhaps the ability to list out a directory is not a "mission critical" application. And you should relax your criteria on that. Have you ever modified your own software that has become mission critical? Who do you call if that goes belly up? This is actually not quite appropriate, since you're not buying anything, including any sort of support contract. I think of it this way: it's 3AM, my system is down, and the piece that's broken is Open Source from SourceForge. Who exactly am I going to call? A company that puts mission critical systems on Open Source software gets exactly what they pay for. This is not to say all Open Source projects are that way. There are Open Source projects that are fully supported, such as IBM's JTOpen. But those are few and far between.
