There are consultants out there who will sell you a support contract, and
then you can call them in 3am just as you do anyone else.

My experience has been that people involved with open source tend to be
much better at support that the big commerical vendors becuase they really
believe in what they're doing, and they've had the ability to learn how
things really work from the source code.

When I call for tech support on commercial software, however, I find that
it's like pulling teeth to get to talk to someone who actually knows how
the software works.

In fact, I generally find posting questions to these mailing lists to be
significantly more constructive than calling tech support on commercial
software.  But, I suppose that's because tech support is geared up for the
non-programmer, non-techie.
