Yup, here's a little of the output from one of ours:

 Files Dependent On Specified File
Dependent File Library Dependency JREF Constraint
       IDX01 VERN Data
       IDX02 VERN Data

DSPFD VERN/IDX01 gives:

File Description Header
  File . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : FILE IDX01
  Library . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : VERN
  Type of file . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : Logical
  File type . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : FILETYPE *DATA
  Auxiliary storage pool ID . . . . . . . . . : 01
Data Base File Attributes
  Externally described file . . . . . . . . . : Yes
  SQL file type . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : INDEX

I believe these are even usable in RPG for keyed access - VIEWs are not, as they are only encapsulated SQL SELECT statements and have no data, no true path to the data until the SQL statement is run.

BTW, I agree with your concern about documentation of changes - that's why some kind of tool like ERWin or Popkin may be helpful, as they reverse engineer your tables and indexes and generate scripts for maintenance. And OpsNave has facilities for generating the CREATE statement for tables and views and indexes.

Then you may need to implement auditing, so that changes to a file can be noticed.

Oy!

If I add an index via SQL, does it properly show up under DSPDBR? And does it exist as a true Logical File?
