Good question. I suspect it's both. Listen, new software has to come to the iSeries. The fastest way to do that is to port applications. Some of these are immensely popular on the iSeries, like Domino. Some of these concepts have been on the iSeries for a long time and unless you just stumbled out of "The Clan of the Cave Bear" you've used them for years - like TCP/IP. But even if you have no intention of ever leaving the cave, I can still remember a PTF that required a vary off/on of our twinaxial workstation controller. A big yawn now, with zero user impact. But back then it sure wasn't. IBM does try in Quality. They do some pretty extreme testing. They invite several companies up to Rochester to test out new releases for a week each prior to it even it going out on beta. Then it goes out to group of beta customers for a couple of months. Have you ever heard Dianne Miller speak at COMMON about Early Programs? Granted, ptf's are done differently. But they do run them through a series of regression tests. However, IBM, like the rest of us, is prone to business pressures. Just today I will be downloading a "test" ptf for V5R2. I want a situation resolved and I am willing to take this risk. (Hence one of the reasons I NEVER do a APYPTF of all products *PERM. Test ptf's may have to be removed, redownload, and reapplied. Perm means a reinstall or a box of candy to get them to gen a second ptf.) And sometimes the difference between test and production even gets to IBM. Microsoft has forever changed the way people look at computer problems, to the point where even IT professionals believe that a reboot is an acceptable way to "fix" a problem. Is this same mentality taking over our beloved box? It's clear that attitudes have changed....
