Al is exactly right - there was a logic to it but over time that logic has been somewhat corrupted. One of the better deals in iSeries applications is one supplied by Worksright - ZipCity. For a nice nominal maintenance you can get the product with quarterly updates. The product contains zip code, state, longitude, latitude, area code, prefix, and some other data. For the price it is hard to beat. We've used it for years and have been extremely satisfied. www.worksright.com Michael Crump Saint-Gobain Containers 1509 S. The first digit is the region of the country, the next two digits are either the city for larger cities (Like Yonkers NY or White Plains NY), and then the last two digits were split up by counties, or groups of counties. This was the original design in about 1960. A few problems occurred: 1). New towns cropped up (subdivisions, villages) and in some cases they got new zip codes, and in other cased they shared. 2). As larger cities got larger (before the advent of the 9 digit zip code), additional zip codes were added. For example, some of the really large buildings in NYC added after the advent of the zip code program got their own zip codes. My suspicion is that this information is not at all proprietary, because the USPS will deliver a letter w/o a zip code, but they don't like to. I suspect that either their is a web site, or you could buy a CD. It might make a good TAA Tool, ad a companion to DSPARACDE! I have to group information by state and have valid 5-digit ZIP codes. Someone told me they believe the first digit is Region (0=northeast, 9 = far west) and digit 2 & 3 are the postal center. Someone else said that digits 1 & 2 signify the political division (State, territory, etc.) --------------------------------------------------------- Booth Martin http://www.MartinVT.com Booth@xxxxxxxxxxxx --------------------------------------------------------- _______________________________________________ This is the Midrange Systems Technical Discussion (MIDRANGE-L) mailing list To post a message email: MIDRANGE-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/midrange-l or email: MIDRANGE-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-l. _______________________________________________ This is the Midrange Systems Technical Discussion (MIDRANGE-L) mailing list To post a message email: MIDRANGE-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/midrange-l or email: MIDRANGE-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-l.
