Why can't we download and burn a CD and boot from the CD and have it do a

I believe you can (though I don't myself - no windows machines to try it on). I believe Lindows and Xandros both will do just what you describe.

(Joe is right. Software is measured today by its lack of need for
instructions. Thats why the browser interface is so successful. Hasn't it
fascinated you that there's no such thing as "Netscape for Dummies"? Even
dummies can't get it wrong. Linux has got to reach that degree of self
installation in order to ever get traction in the desktop market.

Perhaps. Though I don't really view the lack of instructions as a good things. I *want* to know what to do. I hate clicking around until something works. I want to know what files are created and where they are. I want to know how to make my own themes. I want to know how changing a line will affect the operation of the program. I want to know how my password is transmitted. I want to know what the heck is going on!! Nothing drives me crazy faster than software which just starts running off doing things without keeping me informed.

Perfect example: the other day I had to work with the DCM (Digital Certificate Manager). The instructions suck. You are supposed to just click on a few things and all is well. Except that all didn't go well. There are no instructions (or README) that tell you what the machine is doing. I needed to remove some files that the machine created in order to start over again. I didn't know where they were created or what they were called. I spent a lot of time moving files around until I figured it out. A nice README would have solved that. Never mind the fact that they don't tell you that a '#' character is invalid in the password or the fact that you have to use IE to work with the DCM.

Antother question: How does Star Office on Linux work compared to how Star
office works on Windows? I am using Star Office 7.0 and so far it is pretty
satisfying.

Star Office is the same regardless of platform. I love the save to PDF feature.
