We have a product from Hawkeye (I'm sure there are other p= roducts) that has an implementation of this. Hawkeye's implementation will = not check the password if it is one invalid attempt away from disabling. Th= e upside on this is that you don't get disabled passwords. The downside is that you cannot verify that the ones not checked aren't using a default pas= sword. However, if the user is using their profi= le as their password we would certainly hope that they can get that right o= n the first time! But I've seen worse...
