I find that

On pre-v5r1 (where 10 chars is the max, as opposed to V5Rx where you can have 
upto 128 chars) it gets no more secure having a password larger than 7 chars 
anyhow (i.e. 8, 9, 10 char passwords are no more secure than just having a 7 
char password), so I guess 8 is a reasonable default.
