Actually there was some discussion as to the mathematics of this quite some time ago. SNA wise I can think of a reason to limit user profiles to 8 characters. Makes WRKDIRE match up better. Doesn't mean a lot as far as passwords. Maybe because 128 characters would really clutter up the signon screen?
