I have been using the telnet client in Linux for a long time. It works beatifull. You have tn5250 for text mode, xt5250 for X-windows and lp5250 to use your Linux printer.

We did get a visit from some lawyers (anti-piracy) at the University, and according to them, Linux doesn't exist.

Actually you might do better to consider migrating them to GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, or other free OSes. There are many who have saved a bundle of money for software and in administration by doing so. But saving money isn't even the biggest advantage; it is the freedom to do what you want with your systems.
