Jim, my experience in this is very shallow but fairly wide. (I've tried lots of stuff once at least) In my 'umble opinion all of these kinds of approaches are really only attempts to teach a pig to sing. It's an ugly thing to see and the pig doesn't like it much either. The data and the rules are already there. Converting from RPGIII to RPGIV is fairly automatic. However, making a few new key applications with Java or VARPG gives the users great new tools. The simple truth is: event-driven programming is much easier, more productive, more attractive, more intuitive for the user (less of a learning curve), and very conducive to modular programming. I hate to say it but the cycle is dead. Cycle-driven screens are dead, too. At least consider a whole new design theme for the code and let the green screens fill their rightful role and then die in honor and with the respect they deserve. They've run for 20+ years. Its time to start another 20+ year paradigm. Products like Joe Pluta's product should be looked at, too. His approach is sort of nifty. --------------------------------------------------------- Booth Martin http://www.MartinVT.com Booth@xxxxxxxxxxxx --------------------------------------------------------- -------Original Message------- From: Midrange Systems Technical Discussion Date: Wednesday, June 11, 2003 10:51:13 PM To: MIDRANGE-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: webfacing and competing products I am looking for comparisons of Webfacing and competing products to put a "face" on existing green screen app. Needs to be run on smaller iSeries, with no on-site technicians. Current code is rpgiii, all files are external, all screens are DSPF, but a lot of programs still look like S36 inside. Screens are very "busy". Would like to hear the good, bad & ugly. If preferred, send comments offline. jim franz
