It was not a coincidence.  IBM did realize that the World needs to put a
name on things.  You can't sell it if it doesn't have a name.  Oracle and
Microsoft and FoxPro and the others had nothing to sell but their data
handling knowledge, so they put a name on it and created a whole new product
arena.   

IBM needed a product name and were amazed to discover they had a stand-alone
product that was already built and was every bit as good as anyone elses.

change - occurred DB2 snared RDB market leadership from Oracle. Go figure...
