Jeff - Many US-based mobile providers allow you to receive short text-based messages by sending an email to a specially formatted email address. For example, to send a text message to my AT&T mobile telephone, you would send it to nnnnnnnnnn@mobile.att.net , where nnnnnnnnnn is my 10-digit telephone number (area code followed by 7-digit number).
