In 1967 I was programming on a "Decade 70" made by the Redcor Corporation with paper tape "teletype like" input, paper tape output, and 2048 bytes of "core memory." The cores were about the size of a U.S. 50 cent piece. About 7 years later I "graduated" to a System/3 Model 6 with some disk for the operating system, but the user data was stored on "ledger cards" with one for each hotel guest, you would find the right card and feed it into the ledger card reader, it would stop on the first blank line, allow you to put in the current charge and then it would print out the new charge with a new total, which it would record on the mag stripe on the back of the ledger card, which is then put back in the "bucket" of ledger cards. -- Charly Jones -- Geezer in Gig Harbor

From "Programmers at Work" by Microsoft Press:
Interviewer: "Is studying computer science the best way to prepare to be a programmer?" Bill Gates: "No, the best way to prepare is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and I fished out listings of their operating system."
