Sounds as if you're looking for some sort of "personal" AS/400 solution
(hey, didn't we have a thread about this a while back? :-)

IMHO, you've pointed up the major weakness in IBM's (apparent) belief that
such a system is unnecessary: namely, they are ignoring the fact that the
way to learn about new things is to try them out (usually breaking
something in the process and then learning how to fix it). For obvious
reasons, most businesses don't encourage this sort of thing on their
production machines, which means that the only people who really get a
chance to fool around on an AS/400 are developers who have their own
machines and businesses that are big enough to have a completely separate
"test" system. My guess is that this group isn't a very big percentage of
the AS/400 community, and it's a major reason why new technologies on the
AS/400 are so slow to be adopted.

I think if IBM wanted to get serious about pushing the platform, they
should make it easier for more people to get their hands on machines that
they can push the limits on and see what can (and can't be done). In the
long run, I think those people would be a big influence in increasing
sales of the bigger, more profitable machines.
