Re: How do I SAV directories and subdirectories in QNTC?

Folks:

This lack of support "makes sense" because "QNTC" is NOT
a true native OS/400 file system; it is "maintained" by a Windows
NT/2000/XP operating system running on another CPU (even if
that CPU happens to be "inside" the AS/400 or iSeries box).

With the QSYS.LIB or "root" or "QOpenSys" IFS file systems,
the "files" in "QSYS", "root" or "QOpenSys" are implemented,
under the covers, as system internal objects, at or below the MI
layer, so the system has support for them, built-in, for things like
SAV and RST.

But, with QNTC, the only "object" OS/400 "sees" is a *BLKSF
(block special file), which is just a "container" for a bunch of disk
space, carved out of the "single level store". Then, under the covers,
it appears to the Integrated Netfinity Server (aka. IPCS) as a SCSI
disk drive. (At least, as I understand it... this might not be 100%
exactly right, but it should be "conceptually" close enough, for
the purposes of this discussion.)

For an "external" file system, such as "QNetWare" for Novell,
or QOPT, etc., then I would not expect to be able to "save" or
"restore" these files using "native" OS/400 commands (eg. SAV).
(The same thing would also most likely apply to "NFS" mounted
file systems on other platforms, such as Unix.)

So, the "real" answer would appear to be that you need to use a
"backup" software product that actually runs under Windows,
on the IPCS or INS, to be able to back-up and restore individual
files within the NT file systems.

(You could back-up the entire *BLKSF, but then, if you restore
it again, you are restoring ALL FILES within ALL of the NT file
systems that are contained in that *BLKSF.  This would be like
using the SAVSTG options to save OS/400 DASD... probably
not what you wanted...)
