Yes the 150 can run V5R1, and the official max memory is is 192MB. It may
recognise memory meant for other machines but this would not be a "supported"
configuration.

I have tried webSphere on the 150 and it is very slow.

The 150 will run V5R1, but:

1. The assync cable console used by the 150 is not supported at V5R1, I would
recommend doing the upgrade using a twinax console, to ensure that you don't
suddenly find yourself without a console halfway though the process.
2. Check the hardware, not all hardware is supported, especially some of the
earlier NWS cards used for network connections.
