This (and some others) model of the 170 had some limitations on the amount of main storage and number of disk arms which prevented the processor from reaching its full potential under IBM's CPW benchmark testing. The constrained figure represents its maximum performance on the benchmark; the unconstrained figure indicates that it would have done better if more stuff could have been added to the box.
