At eighty or ninety percent, your disk arms are not operating efficiently and are slowing down your system. Your processor is waiting for data from the disks so it is not very active. This is a pure hardware problem. Generally speaking, disk activity should not exceed about forty percent for extended periods of time. - If the data being accessed is all on one drive so that that drive is very busy while the others are idle, then use the ASPBAL commands to spread your data across all of your drives. From your description, I don't think that this is the case. - Buy more drives. If you add more drives (disk arms) and then use the ASPBAL commands to spread your data, you will receive immediate benefit. You need to get your disk activity to forty percent or lower and this is the easiest way to do it. - If the 720 is used for other purposes which also drive high disk utilization, you could try to move some of those functions to another machine. Some more information might be helpful: How many drives do you have and what kind of disk protection do you use? What capacity are the drives? 4 GB, 8 GB, 17 GB? Are the high activity levels spread fairly evenly across all of your drives or is it concentrated on one or two drives? When the 720 receives the data from the queue, I assume that it initiates some business processing. Is this a very intense process like order entry?
