I have to agree with a previous post that suggested setting CHGPRTF or OVRPRTF 
HOLD(*YES) MAXRCDS(*NOMAX).

If you're intending to auto-reply with *NOMAX, there doesn't seem to be a 
reason not to have the printfile defined that way to begin with. And it's easy 
enough to call QUSRSPLA after the spoolfile is created to check number of 
pages/lines and decide whether to release it or not; it won't create a 
noticeable delay.
