One question and maybe an answer:

Doesn't the LAN console require a dedicated LAN card?

On the Internet PTFs, the V4 way was to connect via web browser, then do
an automated FTP transfer from IBM to your PC, which flows through to
the AS/400 using Client Access file transfer (all automated).  Ended up
as a Savf on the 400 so you had to apply the PTF from a Savf source.
