Reeve, Thanks to you and all who offered/continue to offer ideas. I'll make this the last "thanks for the info" reply but do extend it to everyone that gives any info or insight. I can't help it, I was raised to say "thank you" but I realize that I tend to overdo it in this type of forum. My thanks and apologies to all. The generator part is not expensive (you have lots of options: diesel, natural gas, etc.); the automatic transfer switch is usually the expensive part. If the power goes out and doesn't come back el prompto, somebody's got to hit the "start" button on the gen set and transfer the UPS input from "line" to "generator" (the UPS is always in the circuit, right before the load). When the power's back on, you transfer the UPS input from gen set back to line and let the gen set cool down before shutting it down. Are you going to power anything other than the AS/400: telephone, emergency lighting, key production machinery (CNC), PC's? You plant engineer will have some ideas and requirements; you'll need to run your generator weekly for a couple of hours to make sure everything continues to work. Hey...at least you don't have to worry about being overrun by losers with boxcutters! -----Original Message----- From: midrange-l-admin@midrange.com [mailto:midrange-l-admin@midrange.com] On Behalf Of Ed Chabot Sent: Monday, November 26, 2001 3:43 PM To: MIDRANGE-L@midrange. com Subject: Backup power supplies We are considering some kind of backup power solution, like a generator, to keep our AS/400 up in the event of a power outage in our area. Does anybody have any insight, recommendations, experiences, etc? Any info is appreciated. Thanks.
