I've been reading this book called Java 2 from scratch.. It rated a
'beginner book' but some of the concepts have gone over my head... But the
premise of the book is simple... It takes you step by step, building a
stock portfoilo application... That uses awt, swing, and panels, menus,
toolbars, graphics, splash screens, connecting to the internet to poll stock
info... So when your done with the book, you have written a complete working
application...

I'm only 1/2 way through, but I liked the concept... But I would suggest
supplementing it with a traditional book...
