Start by downloading "Thinking in Java" from the web. Just search for it and you'll find it. There are exercises and the whole bit for you to test what you have learned. Get involved in discussion lists like the two here, Java400 and Java101. Ask questions, don't let people make you feel "dumb". If they do, politely tell them to stop. (I've seen this more on the Usenet Java lists). There are some who are happy to help and do a great job. Others will go over your head. :) Just keep asking questions. I can guarentee even if you think it's a small question, there will be others that will learn from it as well. (The infamous Lurker). And don't forget a decent IDE. I use JCreator. It seems to work pretty good and the "lite" version is free. Most of these techniques will teach you Java/OO, but sadly there aren't any/many examples of how to use these to your advantage in Business programming. There are plenty of references to sites that supposedly are using it for their business, but that's all they are. References.
