Chuck: I do a fair amount of LPAR planning and I would suggest the following: 1. GOTO the LPAR website and read everything you can. Familiarize yourself with the process of planning, how to use the worksheets and when to send them to Rochester for validation. http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/lpar/ 2. Download the LPAR Validation Tool from this site. This tool is extremely valuable in designing LPAR machines. There is a User Guide out there also so you can learn how to use the tool. If you are doing a purely 8xx solution you can design the whole machine with the LVT. IF you are doing a combination of 7xx and 8xx hardware, i.e. mig towers. You will also need to download the worksheets which are used to help plan the machine. 3. Always remember that the most critical part of LPAR (IMHO) is Planning. When in doubt, read this again. 4. If it is feasible for you, I would highly suggest going to Rochester for the LPAR class. It is excellent and allows you to get some hands on before you start working with LPAR. They spend a fair amount of time on (surprise) planning and system design as well as implementation. 5. Realize that when you go to actually placing the machine into eConfig, you must specify the #0140 feature on the config, which indicates that it will be an LPAR box. This feature triggers a restricted build in Rochester which essentially does not allow a preload of the OS or SLIC. It also means that when you get the machine, the cards will generally not be in the slots you need them in. Therefore, you will need to be sure you KEEP A COPY OF YOUR LVT OUTPUT AND WORKSHEETS!!!! as these docs are actually what you or the CE will use to configure the hardware on the machine - both physically and logically. --------------------- Kevin E. (Replace two AS/400's with a single, larger system.) We are just starting to examine this. Neither I, nor anyone else here, has set up a LPAR system before. I have found the "Slicing the AS/400 with Logical Partitioning: A How to Guide" and "Capacity Planning for Logical Partitioning on the IBM iSeries Server" redbooks. Does anyone have any other suggestions for sources on preparing for using LPAR's? TIA, Chuck Morehead Nokuse Consulting - Providing high value Information Technology Services.
