Multiple question marks means multiple passes to interpret the value.

??20?? means to take the contents of parameter 20 and use that as a
parameter number.

So on the first pass through the code given above, parameter 4 is checked
for being equal to L.  Then parameter 7 is checked for being equal to L,
then parameter 10.  (Assuming that parameter 20 is not changed except in the
code shown.)

evaluate and multi-pass interpretation gives the capability to process
parameters like an array, rather having to code for each individual
parameter.
