Hi Shannon - >I recently added an exit point to my FTP server on my V4R5 >system and noticed that in the last day, I've been "probed" >by one Asian-Pacific IP address and two European IP addresses. > >They weren't able to get on and do anything, but still leaves >me feeling a bit "violated". ha! > >Just curious if anyone else has seen any attempts to get onto >your iSeries recently from those parts of the world. It is highly unlikely that it has anything to do with the iSeries. There are lots and lots of hackers and script kiddies probing for open ports on random or groups of IP addresses. As a result, any connection to the Internet should be protected by a firewall. Any full-time corporate connection should be protected by a firewall applicance. What you need depends on your requirements. If you only have outgoing connections and a limited number of users, a Netgear RO318 or SonicWALL SOHO2 or something of that nature would be quite adequate. This would block all incoming connections (except those that are in response to an outgoing connection, such as ping replies and FTP in non-passive mode). If you need to accept incoming connections, then it gets more complicated (and more expensive to do it right). Ken Southern Wine and Spirits of Nevada, Inc.
