Have a look at   www.dshield.org

to have a look at whats going on in port scanning and probing of "unlocked 
doors".

They are collecting statistics all over the world.

My own experience is that I would NEVER trust in exit programs only, always use
a firewall, better use a combination of firewall and proxy to keep the skript 
kiddies out
and hold up the more serious ones.
Best would be to have a router which has its own packet filters and at least 
some protection
against syn flood attacks and damaged tcpip headers between the exernal net and 
your
firewall machine...

I could go on, if you are interested ...   :-)

P.S.:  The most serious attacks I have been watching at my customers came from 
cablemodem
accounts of earthlink.net (USA), they seem to have no measure of control about 
their clients.
