Fair enough. The obvious caveat of "make sure you apply the latest cume
pack" notwithstanding, I'd say that V5R1 IS ready for production. Given that
you're ordering a new machine that by default comes with V5R1 I'd not mess
with changing it, get V5R1. Depending on the hardware you're looking at you
may not even have a choice.

Rob also makes some good arguments in his post, but I'd counter that they
are business arguments. End-of-support is _always_ a good business argument.
Why anyone would want to run on an unsupported OS is beyond me. Access to
/free( I forgot about that one) alone is almost a reason to move, but ONLY
if you're programming in RPG and you're programmers will use it. There are a
lot of programmers out there still using RPG/400.

I've been on V5R1 for about 6 months. Are there problems, of course. Are
there PTFs, of course. But as Rob also said, there are problems and PTFs on
V4R5. My point was simply "don't rock the boat" when you don't need to.
You're already rocking the boat with the new machine, you might as well get
V5R1 too.

For us, there is no compelling "business" reason to remain on V4R5 OR move
to V5R1. I am basically asking if the OS is stable enough to move to. The
new machine comes configured with V5R1 and I'll get through the negotiations
a lot quicker if I can leave it the way it is (I'm not in the U.S.).

I'm basically looking for anything that dramatically changes in V5R1 or any
pitfalls that anyone on this list has actually run into with V5R1 (the only
thing I've seen are many PTF's). They are very hard to get here (iPTF
doesn't work).

Thanks in advance,

Jose,

I'd actually ask the reverse question. WHY do you want to move up? I'd never
look to load anything onto a production machine until there is a compelling
business reason to do so. If you're running fine on V4R5, stay there. If you
NEED the enhancements of V5R1 (Linux, LPAR on single processor, etc.) then
you need to upgrade, but until then...
