Does IBM define what is batch and what is interactive in the license agreement? Is a job that is served by a batch server, by definition batch? Is an interaction with a web user a batch or an interactive job? In the old dumb terminal usage I think it was clear, but not so much now. Is the only difference between a job being batch or interactive a bit being set on or off? When does IBM define what is interactive or batch? Is it defined when I leased the OS or is IBM allowed to change it as they see fit? >>"IBM agreements prohibit customers from activating, or allowing a third party product to activate, built in capacity without authorization from and payment to IBM" Ed's "official" IBM comments seem to say that PKZIP (activates DASD capacity) is prohibted unless it is authorized from IBM. What about if someone sells a optimized compiler? >>"IBM's long standing advice has been, and continues to be, to not run patched programs." What is a non patched program? OS/400 ships with patches. I don't think I'll be in the market for Fast400 any time soon, but I'm interested in what happens in the market. Also what a way to test what a new processor or interactive feature would do for your performance. Usually when you purchase upgrades all you have is a bunch of numbers estimating performance on a max'ed config for a certain model. Normally your not "coming" from a maxed machine or "going" to a max machine, so it's all guess work, with the customer holding the bag if they and IBM make a bad guess. With Fast400 you could try that processor for a quarter of a year and see if you need to go up more or needed to add addition DASD or RAM. Hey, what if IBM sold it as a marketing tool?
