Depending upon the structure of the application software that a person's job
responsibilities relate to, it is often productive for them to be accessing
several simpler program windows almost concurrently. We are on BPCS, but
this would apply to almost any ERP.

Consider a person working with inventory or labor input on a multi-session
work station or a PC with multiple 400 sessions.

One side is doing the transactions.
One side is inquiring into inventory status.
One side is inquiring into shop order status.
Having rapid ability to inquire into stuff that is related to the
transactional processing, separately from the transactional processing, helps
them do their job more productively.
Then they get interrupted with a question on some other topic.
Without getting out of where they were, they open another side to check out
an MRP question.

Consider a person doing engineering work.
One side is updating the routings - step by step instructions how the part is
manufactured.
One side is updating the product structure - bill of materials included in
the assembly
One side is inquiring into the rates that we have been able to achieve in
manufacturing similar parts according to our reporting history

In the last few evenings I have been testing some software modifications.

On one side is the source program that I have not 100% perfected & into it I
am adding some notes & searching for hit scenarios.
On one side I am running the program that I have been working on
On one side I am going into the item that the program is trying to update, to
deliberately block access to update where the old error recovery routine had
been working unsatisfactorily, to see if the new version is a gentler regime
to my satisfaction

I can cite other examples.
