AS/36 could do SSP without 400
I believe ONLY AS/236 or AS/436 could do this, not the other AS/400 models.

SSP when run as M36 guest of 400 could go up to 3 independent M36 on
different SSP rules & files contained ... very much like partitions whose
contents could not be intermingled ... basiically you designated how much
disk space to assign to this or that M36 exclusive use
Users could "hot key" between M36 reality & 400 native mode

36E is part of 400 ... its rules are similar but not identical to M36
M36 supported everything that SSP supported on the old 36 box

When we migrated from 36 5360 to AS/436 we had compiled programs for which
the source code had been lost, we had lots of WSU, which is not supported by
400 36E - we migrated it across & it continued to run with no problem

This was an IBM solution for customers who did not want to give up their old
36
It is now obvious that those customers should have remained on 36 or AS/36 &
not used the migration path to other AS/400 unless they needed, as we did,
some of the stuff on 400 that was not available to 36

My ASsumption has been that if you on M36 as guest of 400 it has to be V4R4
or earlier OS/400 & if you on SSP without 400 in the picture, it has to be
AS/36 box.

There were URLs for the AS/36 community that I have not used in eons, so
these may no longer be any good, or may have been rebranded, but perhaps they
can clue you to additional factoids
