This is terrible, but after being assured by the network guru's that the router was passing things along, it turned out that they had a block on SMTP from our production box. They changed to allow outgoing mail only and Voila it works. I could just scream. They were asked several times, and promised that it couldn't possibly be on their end. I had to have something wrong with my program. <wisps of steam from ears> Thanks for all your help and thoughts.
