If they did not have a contract and if it was an "at will" work state (each state in the U.S. has its own laws), then employers can terminate employees at any time without prior notice, and likewise the employees can leave at any time without prior notice. The state where I live and work (Nevada) is like that. I could go walk into my boss's office and tell her I'm quitting and walk out the door and it would be completely legal.
