If you're referring to the 'return receipt' feature, I believe that this functionality is embedded in the message header and could be present with or without HTML. There are also some HTML tricks, such as embedding 'invisible' links to web sites in your message, which can transmit information to the sender without your knowledge. This could not happen with text.
