There exist mailing list managers that handle email attachments, including HTML. One in particular that I've seen sends digests where each component email is an attachment. This means that HTML messages get the right MIME type and (if your MUA can do it) will be displayed properly. Naturally, I can't remember the name of the software that did this, but I have seen it and I believe it's one of the Open Source mailing list managers.
