I don't think that a decent migration path is even possible. The folks who hacked out PowerBuilder client software in the mid-90's didn't have a migration path when they rewrote it all for Visual Studio or Java or whatever was next. The rest of the world isn't waiting for their hardware or OS provider to provide a standard interface. Maybe that's the problem. Most of the AS/400 world is accustomed to having their foundation supplied by IBM. -Jim -----Original Message----- From: Joe Pluta [mailto:joepluta@PlutaBrothers.com] Sent: Monday, July 02, 2001 12:15 PM To: MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com Subject: RE: Free OS/400 Jim wrote: Gee, maybe IBM had the right idea when they created the Interactive Feature pricing structure. By charging a small fortune for the green screen interface maybe it will force us to start using the system as a server instead of as a baby mainframe. --------- I'd tend to agree, if only they gave us a decent migration path. Webfacing is a poor solution; it's really just a glorified screen-scraper. But then again, the concept of moving an existing program from monolithic green screen to a true client/server design is a lot of work that can't easily be packaged and sold, and developing a standard client/server infrastructure is a lot of work which doesn't immediately benefit IBM's bottom line.
