Check out protocol converters.  There are several out their that give you
RS232,422... to IP that can front end to your AS400 via a custom socket
client program.  Predicia I think is one and Systech is another that I can
think of off the top of my head.  You can plug in an IR device to a serial
port off one of these boxes.  As for USB, see if they have one coming in the
future.

I'd prefer to hook directly up to the /400...   in order for the /400 to
prevent the proliferation of front end PC's (the NT syndrome I call it...
just stick another processor in front of whatever you're trying to connect
to) the /400 needs to communicate with everything.  Anybody have any idea if
it will support a USB connection anytime soon?
