OK... so you want to connect directly to the iSeries...

One of the great things about Linux is the "attach anything,
interface anything, but you get to do it yourself" aspect.
You don't have to wait for IBM to announce and deliver the interface.
Since Linux will soon be available, and you can either use
iSeries IO devices or use "dedicated" IO devices within Linux,
all you need to do is get a PCI card for an infrared sensor,
plug it into the bus that Linux is running on and then either
write your own driver for it, or maybe you get lucky and
someone somewhere is the world is already working on a Linux
driver for an infrared device.

Could be a lot of fun, nights and weekends, hacking away...
