Here is a copy/paste of one of my queries. This one is taking a character 6 byte date field in YYMMDD and converting it to a date type field. In order for it to work your field that you use the DATE expression on must be in whatever your job date format is, complete with separators. If your original field is numeric then you must use the DIGITS expression to convert it to a character field first. If you press the help key while in the Define Result Fields display, there are some good explanations and examples if you search through it long enough.
